THE MARQUIS DE SADE
25 to 65 years old, all ethnicities, any gender. Strong physical actor. Sexy, yet disgusting. Confident, brilliant and sadistic. Must be a good improv/immersive actor. MUST SPEAK SOME FRENCH OR DO A CONVINCING FAKE FRENCH. The Marquis de Sade is a French aristocrat and libertine who operates in his own amoral universe--a champion for all freedoms, especially sexual, without limits. De Sade pushes back hard against societal norms. It is no surprise that he spent considerable time in prisons and asylums, the last being Charenton where this play is set. While incarcerated, de Sade spent his time writing and often directed the other inmates or patients in acting out his perverse fantasies.
30 to 70 years old, all ethnicities, man, transgender man, nonbinary. Strong physical actor. Creepy and sinister. A sadistic zealot straight out of the Inquisition. The Priest is triggered by de Sade’s rebellious nonconformity and seeks to break his spirit. Represents religious oppression.
30 to 65 years old, all ethnicities, any gender. Strong physical actor. Doing the best they can with what they know, which isn’t much. Though the doctor enters the asylum with a sincere desire to help, their failures and the horrors of the asylum drive them slowly mad, and they conduct more and more bizarre experiments on the patients
20 to 50 years old, all ethnicities, any gender. Strong physical actor. A former inmate at the asylum; their questionable sanity is tested at every turn leaving them conflicted and confused. Their only comfort is in blind obedience to the alpha orderly.
25 to 50 years old, all ethnicities, man, transgender man. Strong physical actor. A jokester with a serious mean streak.
YOUNGER FEMALE PATIENT
20 to 40 years old, all ethnicities, woman, transgender woman. Strong physical actor. Suffers from what we now know to be postpartum depression.
OLDER FEMALE PATIENT / NURSE
40 to 65 years old, all ethnicities, woman, transgender woman. Strong physical actor. Bears a resemblance to de Sade’s mother. From the moment de Sade sees her, they share a strong connection. She also feels a bond with the other females in the play and tries to protect them. The Nurse is her “alter-ego” - the product of the systematic oppression of women, especially smart, capable women, by men who aren’t fit to lick their boots. Her revenge on that gender is epically brutal.
20 to 40 years old, all ethnicities, man, transgender man. Strong physical actor. Representing the fragile masculine ego, he goes through a journey trying to prove his manhood.
20 to 50 years old, all ethnicities, any gender. Must move well and be strong physical performers. Throughout the show, puppeteers will be performing a variety of tasks and puppets. Puppeteers will also be actors in a few scenes.
